Privacy policy

What Keepwell and this website collect, why, and what we do with it.

Draft for the beta. This policy will be reviewed before Keepwell goes on sale. Items in [brackets] are still to be decided.

In short: the app does its work on your computer. Your files, file names and folder names never leave it. Our server only receives what it needs to check your license, start your free trial, send the alert emails you ask for, and offer updates.

Who we are

Keepwell is published by Kernel, LLC ("we", "us"). Contact: support@kerneltag.com. [Postal address.]

What stays on your computer

Drive health readings, their history, the activity log, your settings, the list of folders you protect, and the copies of your files stay on your computer and on the drive you choose for the copy. We never receive them.

What our server receives, and why

Licenses and free trials

To check that a license or trial is valid, and how many computers use it, the app sends:

  • your license key (a trial gets one automatically)
  • a fingerprint of the computer: a code made from Windows' installation ID and the hardware's serial numbers, which can't be turned back into them
  • the computer's name and the app's version

Our server also sees and records the internet address the request comes from, and when the computer was activated and last checked in. The app checks in about once a week.

Your account (optional)

If you create an account, we keep your name or company name, your email address, and your password in a protected form (a salted hash, which can't be turned back into the password). We use them to prove your purchase, so you can set up the app again without your key, and to email you codes for confirming your address or resetting your password.

Alert emails (if you turn them on)

We keep the address alerts should go to. Each alert passes through our server and our email provider so it can be delivered. An alert describes the computer and its drives: the computer's name, make, model and serial number, the signed-in Windows user, the Windows version and time zone, and each drive's model, serial number, health, risk, life expectancy and temperature. It never contains file names or file contents. We don't keep the content of alert emails; our server log only notes that one was sent, and to which address.

Updates

Once a day the app asks whether a newer version is out, sending only its version number. When you download a setup program, our server logs the file and the internet address that asked for it.

Purchases

Payments are handled by [our payment provider], which sells the license on our behalf. It tells us your name, email address, country and what you bought, so we can send your license key. We never see your card details.

This website

This website uses no cookies, no analytics and no advertising. It's hosted by Cloudflare, which processes your internet address to deliver the pages and protect them from attacks.

Support

When you email us, we keep the conversation so we can help you, and refer back to it if you write again.

Who else handles it

We use a few service providers, only to run the service:

  • Cloudflare: hosts this website and carries the connection between the app and our server
  • Brevo: sends our emails (codes and alerts)
  • [Payment provider]: sells licenses and handles payments and taxes

We don't sell your information, and we don't share it for advertising.

How long we keep it

  • License, trial and account information: while the license or account is in use, and [for N years] afterwards for our records.
  • Server logs: [for up to 12 months].
  • Support emails: [for up to N years].

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account (your license keeps working). Email support@kerneltag.com. If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to object to how we use your information and to complain to your data protection authority. [Legal bases for each use, and any state-specific notices, to be added.]

Security

All traffic between the app and our server is encrypted (HTTPS). Licenses are digitally signed, passwords are stored only as salted hashes, and access to our server is limited to us.

Children

Keepwell isn't meant for children, and we don't knowingly collect information about them.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the date below.
